Ian Hargreaves, Professor of Digital Economy at Cardiff University, has written an interesting article on this subject, which you can read here: http://en.ejo.ch/specialist-journalism/campaigning-investigative-independent-is-community-journalism-coming-of-age
It includes Professor Hargreaves’ take on some of my recent hyperlocal policy recommendations, as well as his hopes for the future. The article also highlights some of the fantastic work being done by The Bristol Cable, as an example of some of the terrific output being produced by a number of UK hyperlocal publishers.
As a journalist, Ian’s career includes being Deputy Editor, Financial Times; Editor The Independent; Editor the New Statesman and Director BBC News and Current Affairs.
Given this background and his on-going editorial and research work (he is, for example, a member of the Editorial Committee of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism) this endorsement for the potential afforded by the sector is both significant and important. I hope that others – including policy makers – will share this enthusiasm as we work together to help take hyperlocal media in the UK to the next level.
